Synopsis
In the early morning hours of 28 March 1942, a section of No. 2 Commando, one of twelve battalion-sized units within the Special Service Brigade, approaches the German-occupied port of Saint-Nazaire, located along the French coast. The commandos are aboard a stripped-down destroyer, the HMS Campbeltown, which has been outfitted with explosives and a number of commandos. The British troops are able to approach the French port using a Nazi flag as cover, but they are spotted and the local garrison opens fire with machine guns and larger batteries. The commandos begin to sustain casualties, but succeed in ramming the dry dock and securing the immediate area.
Lieutenant William Holt, an American agent with the Office of Strategic Services, has been assigned to the commandos with the objective of securing a number of documents relating to the new V-2 rocket. However, he is knocked unconscious during the initial collision and does not awake until the battle is fully underway. Informed that the unit's radio operator, Winslow, has been killed and the radio severely damaged, Holt makes his way along the docks in an effort to link up with Captain Beck, who now possesses the only working radio. After escorting him back to the HMS Campbeltown, he calls in an aerial strike to further weaken the local defenders. During this time, the commandos regroup and prepare to advance further into the dockyard.
